The Jazz Botânico duo formed by DJ MAM, multi-artist, composer and singer, and Rodrigo Sha, multi instrumentalist, singer and composer brings together instrumental music with the enchants of Brazilian forests.
Arrangements well based on Sha’s guitar and winds are combined with modern keyboard sounds that, together with MAM’s electronic beats, reveal voices, effects and treasures coming from sensitive and rhythmic drums translating the environment and all the energy of nature and the astral nature of the world immensity of Brazilian landscapes.
Creators of the musical genre “Brazilian Lounge” – ambient music that values Brazilianness in soft beats of “lounge music” -, which named the group launched in 2002 on the catwalk of the Osklen brand as the official track of Fashion Rio at the Museum of Modern Art RJ. Over the years, they made several presentations at events in the city of Rio, in addition to having a season on the radio program Brazilian Lounge MPB FM on Estrela da Lapa (RJ) with the duo receiving big names in Brazilian popular music, such as Elba Ramalho , Fabiana Cozza, Danilo Caymmi and others.
Designed with the purpose of communicating the Environment through music, Jazz Botânico is a project that consolidates the partnership between MAM and Sha. In 2021, they composed and produced the duo’s eponymous album together, bringing together the beats, instruments and sound effects created by the duo, marking the transition of their artistic persona from Brazilian Lounge to Botanical Jazz.
Mostly instrumental and with samples from nature and everyday life, the album “Jazz Botânico” also features the song “Vai fale com Deus”, released at the SOS Rainforest Live festival, performed by Sting, with a sung version, produced during the pandemic period and which features percussionist Marcos Suzano.
In addition to the tracks from “Jazz Botânico”, the presentation includes the song “Redentor”, which won the theme song competition for the 80th anniversary of Christ the Redeemer, in 2011, in addition to the song “Oba Rio”, released in partnership with the department of Tourism of the city of Rio de Janeiro (RioTur).
Since 2021, the duo has been releasing songs in favor of indigenous peoples and in alert to climate crises, such as: “Três Quartos do Mundo”, “Do Guarani ao Guaraná”, “Demarcação Jazz” and “Waka Arewê”. “Três Quartos do Mundo”, by DJ MAM and Rodrigo Sha, was composed 10 years ago when Japanese producer Makoto Kubota commissioned the “electronic calm” in solidarity with the victims of the Tsunami that devastated his country. The song features the participation of Marcos Suzano, singer Juju Gomes and drums AWA ODORI.
“Do Guarani ao Guaraná” is composed of an excerpt from the song “Demarcação Já”, by Carlos Rennó and Chico César. The version by Sha and DJ Mam features the voice of MPB master Gilberto Gil and the special participation of Lenine, in addition to the ancient ancestral song “Nhanderu tenondeguiae”, by Coral Guarani Tenonderã. The musical production was done in partnership with the trio Manie Gang.
“Demarcação Jazz” features the voices of Elza Soares and Ney Matogrosso, in addition to the sound with the Xavante Indians from the Amazon. Once again, the duo joins forces with Japanese producer Makoto Kubota in the recreation of “Demarcação Já”, a song by Chico César and Carlos Rennó, which serves the Greenpeace and Instituto Socioambiental campaign. The music features the ancestral singing of the indigenous people in a mix of jazz fusion and world music.
“Waka Arewê” unites Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon in this version of Botanical Jazz for the composition of the indigenous Paka Chai, from Aldeia Samaúma, with Latin American elements in an organic-electronic pulse that takes us back to Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean references, like ijexá and cumbia.
